Built for the barrel-chested & below-average height
Most menswear is drafted for a tall, flat-fronted body. If you're short and carry your weight up front, every "regular fit" ends up a maternity smock that still rides up. We draft from a different block entirely.
Why we started this
"That gap between the hem and my belt line? That's a medium doing its best. I started Short & Fat Co because 'size up' was never actually a fix."
This is me on an ordinary day at the desk, in a standard-block tee. It's not a bad shirt — it's just cut for a taller, flatter body than mine. Multiply that by every t-shirt I owned, and you've got the whole reason this company exists.
— Jordan, founder
The problem
Standard blocks assume height and width scale together. Yours don't — and that mismatch is exactly where every shirt you own goes wrong.
Sizing up fixes the belly and ruins everything else. Go up two sizes for the gut and you're swimming in shoulder, sleeve and neckline.
The hem hits mid-thigh. Length is drafted for someone 6 inches taller than you, so it un-tucks itself and bunches at the waistband.
It rides up the second you sit down. No belly curve in the pattern means the front hem climbs every time you bend, reach or drive.
How we draft differently
Every pattern starts from a shorter, rounder block — not a tall block with the belly padded in as an afterthought.
Know before you buy
Measured flat, garment on. Chest is taken at the fullest point of the belly, not the armpit — that's the number that actually matters for you.
| Size | Chest / belly (cm) | Body length (cm) | Sleeve (cm) | Collar (cm) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S – Compact | 106–114 | 66 | 19 | 44 | 5'2"–5'5", athletic-stocky |
| M – Compact | 114–122 | 68 | 20 | 46 | 5'3"–5'6", solid build |
| L – Compact | 122–132 | 70 | 21 | 48 | 5'4"–5'7", full belly |
| XL – Compact | 132–144 | 72 | 22 | 50 | 5'4"–5'8", full belly |
| 2XL – Compact | 144–158 | 74 | 23 | 52 | 5'5"–5'8", broad & round |
| 3XL – Compact | 158–172 | 76 | 24 | 54 | 5'5"–5'8", broad & round |
Between two sizes on the chest but the length fits? Size up — every Compact fit has 8–10cm of built-in belly ease, so it won't go baggy in the shoulder the way a regular-fit upsize does.
The range
Same short-and-round pattern underneath, styled four different ways.
From the fitting room
"First shirt in a decade I haven't had to tuck twice during dinner."
"I finally ordered my actual chest size instead of guessing two sizes up."
"The sleeves land where my arms actually are. Small thing, enormous relief."
Questions
Big & tall ranges scale everything up together — more chest, more length, more sleeve. Compact only adds room through the belly and chest while keeping the body length and sleeve short, because height and girth don't move together on your build.
Go with the chest/belly measurement first and size up if in doubt. Every Compact fit has enough built-in ease that a size up won't leave you swimming in the shoulder the way it would in a standard cut.
